Reach Out and Read uses books and shared reading to promote healthy relationships, school readiness, and early literacy skills among children who are at increased risk for reading failure.

The Wordwell Foundation ensures that all patients at Jacobi Pediatrics receive a brand new, developmentally and culturally appropriate book at every routine check-up — a book to take home and love.

One book goes a long way.

More exposure to reading promotes brain development

Reach Out and Read builds on the power of the parent/doctor relationship as well as the consistent nature of pediatric health supervision.

During well-child visits from birth through age

six, pediatricians counsel parents about the significance of reading aloud with young children, and provide age-appropriate tips, encouragement, and the materials needed to make books a treasured part of their children’s lives.

Research shows that when pediatricians promote literacy according to the Reach Out and Read model, there is a significant effect on parental behavior, beliefs, and attitudes towards reading aloud, as well as improvements in the language scores of young children receiving the intervention.
